Les bateaux-phares sont utilisés lorsqu’un phare ne peut être installé à un endroit particulier. Le Goodwin Sands est un banc de sable d’environ 20 km de long, situé au sud-est de l’Angleterre, près de Douvre, et est un site où de nombreux navires se sont échoués. Trois bateaux-phares y furent affectés : le North Goodwin, le East Goodwin et le South Goodwin.
Le South Goodwin, bateau de 317 tonnes, fut construit en 1937 et mesurait 36 mètres de longueur. Pendant la nuit du 26 au 27 novembre 1954, lors d’une violente tempête, les amarres du South Goodwin se brisèrent et le navire dériva jusqu’à un banc de sable où il chavira et fut détruit par les vagues. Un seul des huit membres de l’équipage fut rescapé par hélicoptère.

Lightships are used where no lighthouse can be used. Goodwin Sands is a sandbank, about 20 km long, in south- east England, near Dover, and is a site of frequent shipwrecks. Three lightships were around the Goodwin Sands : the NorthGoodwin, the East Goodwin and the South Goodwin.
The South Goodwin, displacing 317 tons, was built in 1937 and was 36 meters long. During the nigth of the 26th to the 27th of november 1954, the lightship broke from her anchorage during a storm and was driven to a sandbank. It capsized and was smashed by waves. Only one man of a crew of eight was rescued by helicopter.
